Discussion took place as to
what our objective should be and it was decided that our main aim was to
prevent the scheme from being passed by the committee on 21 June.
It must be stopped because :
a. There is no demand for it
b. It is a discrimatory
scheme i.e. it only affects residents in certain areas of the city
c. It is in breach of our human rights
d. There is no benefit to ourselves.
The Council have not
addressed the cause of the problem i.e. commuters and poor public transport.
It is supposed to be
revenue-neutral yet some of the money raised is to be used for street lighting
across the city.
The discrepancies in
information indicates that the Council has not communicated well.
Action
Meet with Robert Booth before
Tuesday, requesting that he withdraw the scheme from the remaining four
areas. Should we not succeed on this, we
will try to get him to agree to postpone the committee meeting on 21 June. The
justification for this request is that the main grounds for the order are in
doubt.
a. If unsuccessful then we will arrange a demonstration
outside the City Chambers on 21 June
b. Write to Haleema and demand that she asks for this
scheme to be withdrawn
c. Contact the councillors on the committee and make them
aware of the strength of feeling in the area. William O’Rourke, Allan Stewart
and Margaret Sinclair.
